Shaun “The Magician” Murphy came from behind to beat Judd Trump in the final of the Gibraltar Open.
Trump, who also finished runner-up in the Welsh Open earlier this year, started strong with breaks of 59 and 84 to take a 2-1 lead. It was clear to see that both players were happy to play their shots in the shortened best of 7 final.
At one apiece Trump fired in a glorious break of 84, only for Murphy to hit back immediately with a break of 60. Frame five and both players made breaks of 56, but it was Shaun who stepped in and cleared from yellow to pink.
Aggressive as ever, Trump nailed a long red in frame six and everything looked set for a final frame decider; however a relatively easy red to the top corner was missed by the 27 year old, which was the signal for Murphy to step in and clear up with a majestic 96 to secure the trophy.
Both players now travel to Llandudno in North Wales for the Players Championship, not before 34 year old Murphy has been to his local bank in Nottingham to deposit his 25,000 Euro winner’s cheque.
Congratulations Shaun Murphy.
